The end of Wigan Pier 1930
Various shots of workmen on the river banks demolishing the pier with various winches and lowering the parts onto a waiting barge. Good L/S of 'WIGAN PIER FILLING STATION'.

In 1974 when I joined the local force Wallgate was my first beat , and Wigan Pier Service Station was still operating then . It was owned by 'Gordon Ford's' Ford garage across the road from it . I have in the past related the tale when one mon came out of the pub across the road , and jumped over the 3' wall behind the petrol station , missed the narrow tow path and ended up in the canal. And going back towards Seven Stars bridge there was a large yard were they used to cut, saw and dress stone . It was all delivered by canal boat and unloaded with their own little crane .Happy days .
