Dean Locks - Gathurst
I know this is not actually in Wigan, but I think it is in the borough...
Not to sure where I found it, FB I think... it shows the original river lock to the River Douglas before the river course was moved.

Does the photo show a lock between the L&L canal and the River Douglas . If so and it was used , did boats come from Preston ( way ) to join the canal . I am most probably wrong , but does any one know , it would be interesting.

The Lancaster Canal was only recently connected to the national waterway network via the Ribble Link in 2002. Fred would know more

Do you know Lolly , I was looking again at the first photo' , and I wondered if it was an overflow from the canal into the River Douglas , as it seams too much of a drop between the two water levels .

It was a river lock because the Dougie was navigable there at the time.

The view towards Dean Locks from beneath the M6 viaduct. Originally there was a dry dock on the right but this was later replaced by a duplicate lock, although this is not currently in use.

Never knew that, Cad..Thanks.
Yes, as Lolly points out the L & L is linked to the Lancaster canal via the new Ribble link.
Here is a link to the Ribble link...Hummm...worth a watch too.

The canal, there, was (is) higher than the river. Boats would 'drop' into the river from the canal. They thought about feeding the canal from the river, but they couldn't get the water to flow uphill, so they gave up!
