Re: Railway Electrification Works at Ince
This old sandstone arch may be replaced by a ‘new concrete arch with stone slip cladding & coper’ (possibly re-using the existing stone), when the bridge is modified.

I think the arch is nice as it is, as long as it's strong and unlikely to collapse why alter it? A repair here and there and a sandblast it would be like new

Re: Railway Electrification Works at Ince
An explanation is given in this letter (prior approval), Lolly: planningdocs.wigan.gov.uk
The existing sandstone arch to the footbridge cannot be retained in situ due to the excavation works required to accommodate the installation of both the overbridge and footbridge. Similarly, it cannot be rebuilt like-for-like on account of the reconfiguration of the bridge following reconstruction. The new bridge will be set back further from the tracks than the existing condition, which would require the on-plan dimensions of the arch to be reduced, while necessitating a larger opening to the footbridge. The extensive changes required to re-provide the appearance of the stone arch would therefore result in considerable alteration to the existing structure, providing limited benefit to the public realm at Ince.

Re: Railway Electrification Works at Ince
In early May, Ladies Lane bridge in Hindley was meant to be demolished so a modern, more suitable structure for the new electrified railway equipment could be built.
But problems aligning this major work with other utility companies meant that the demolition could not happen as originally planned.
As demolition work like this cannot take place while trains are running, Network Rail will need to close the route for a second time at the end of this month.
Passengers are being advised of the six-day railway closure between Saturday 24 June and Friday 30 June.
During this time rail replacement buses will keep people on the move Wigan North Western, Westhoughton, Daisy Hill, Ince and Lostock.
