Uncle Joe's mint balls....
What a ‘sweet’ throwback from the Uncle Joe’s factory.
The humble mint ball first went on sale in Wigan market back in 1898, as a side line of William Santus’ fruit and veg stall. Such was it’s popularity that it soon became his sole trade and he not only outgrew his kitchen, but his first factory on Kenyon road. By 1919, they had moved production to Dorning Street and 125 years, they are still as popular.
They are also currently part of an exciting exhibition at the Museum of Wigan Life: Uncle Joes’ – Making Life Sweeter for 125 years
It’s free to visit and is open Tuesdays – Fridays; 10am – 4pm and Saturdays; 10am – 2pm
