Market Hall Canopy
Cast iron canopy recovered from Old Market Hall.
Produced at the Sun Foundry in Glasgow by George Smith & Co. The Glasgow Sun Foundry produced a range of excellent designs for gates, railings, bandstands, and their specialty, ornamental fountains.
In 2023, the Canopy was removed for safe storage due to the Galleries redevelopment, the intention is to relocate within the new development. Currently, the exact location is still under discussion.

Re: Market Hall Canopy
I assume that was made for The Galleries when it was built.
I do hope it gets reused.
Funny how you can get nostalgic for something relatively new.

Re: Market Hall Canopy
Thanks for that Lolly.
I thought it looked too fancy and ornate to be made or a modern building.
It would be nice to take something from the past into the future.

Re: Market Hall Canopy
When the Galleries first opened, and right up into the 00's I wasn't even aware that, that Canopy had come from the old Market Hall, I had not seen anything written about it when the new Market Hall opened in 1987 or when phase 2 of the Galleries opened in the early 1990s, and it was only with the onset of the internet era, when a famous Wiganer posted a picture of that Canopy online, asking if anyone recognised it, and nobody knew what or where it was.
