A very evocative picture.
It looks like the lad in the bottom left hand corner is taking his mum or dad's dinner to their workplace, and the big square lantern to the left of the hoarding is over the entrance to the Fleece Hotel.

My father was born in 1902, in Scholes. I can imagine my grandparents walking around town when it was just like this.

Junction of Church Street and Parliament Street.
The chap in the white coat was known as 'Papa' Winstanley. He wasn't quite 'all there'.
There was no need for him to direct traffic, it was just one of his little foibles.
The building on the left with railings at the front was the old Legs of Man pub, which was demolished in the late 1920s.
Baxters store can be seen on the opposite side of the road.
