Still time to submit your views to Wigan Council.

I’m wondering if people could organise a town centre protest or similar.

Lisa says as for Wigan, she is satisfied with the reassurances she has received so far, but local scrutiny alone is not sufficient, and is calling for government action. (Wigan Today, 12th Jul)

Protest the Demolition of Wigan Market / Galleries
A protest against the demolition is due to take place on Friday (July 16th).
Independent councillor Paul Maiden, who is organising the protest, said there is ‘anger’ and ‘frustration’ among people who have ‘big concerns’ about BCEGI.
“But even if it was a better company building it, it’s still a bad development.” (Wigan Today, 12th Jul)

Re: The Galleries
It is difficult to hold protests at the moment though:
www.gov.uk:
Most restrictions on meeting people outdoors have been lifted, but gatherings must not exceed 30 people unless covered by a legal exemption
And as Wigan is an area where the Delta variant is spreading fastest:
[i]You should try to:
Keep 2 metres apart from people that you do not live with (unless support bubble)
Minimise travel in and out of affected areas

Re: The Galleries
This story is on Facebook , so could well
be way off the mark ....but .
Buried in the plans to demolish and rebuild the
galleries into flats is a clause stating that one of the oldest buildings
in the town centre , the Market Tavern , is to be incorperated in the
demolition , and flats built on the site.

Re: The Galleries
Some of the objections from Wigan Building Preservation Trust (Wed 14 Jul):
In the immediate vicinity are a number of original Victorian and Georgian buildings which have lain empty for a number of years … These buildings represent some of our 'heritage at risk' and should be renovated and re-purposed as the first priority.
The Planning Departments Prospectus suggests that the New Market Street properties, some of which are Council owned, are candidates for demolition.
The Council's Planning and Heritage objectives appear to be disconnected.
